The Restoration Movement: Speaking as the Oracles of God
"Speak where the Scriptures speak and be silent where the Scriptures are silent." Where did that plea come from, and why does it still matter?
The Restoration Movement: Speaking as the Oracles of God is a 156-page history by L. A. Stauffer.
How This Book Helps
Many members of churches of Christ know the slogans of the Restoration Movement without knowing the people behind them or what they were trying to do. Without that history, it's hard to explain to others, or to ourselves, why we worship and organize the way we do.
Stauffer traces the movement's quest for unity through a return to the ancient order of the New Testament church, and explains why its leaders were convinced that human creeds and traditions had to go. He tells the stories of John Glas, Robert Sandeman, Barton W. Stone, Thomas and Alexander Campbell, and Walter Scott, and shows what each contributed and what lasted.
