Boyd Hastings

Boyd Hastings is a retired teacher with 36 years of experience.   Most of those years, he taught students in a variety of Ag-related classes. After retirement, he continued farming and mentored for a local university’s new urban food production program. It was while attending one of their open houses to highlight the university’s new School of Agriculture that Hastings had a most interesting encounter.

Self-introductions with the young man sitting across from him at the lunch table revealed that he was the grandson of Hastings’ own Ag teacher, two generations earlier. Once the connection was made, Hastings told the teacher that he remembered what the young man’s grandfather had told him on the first day of class back in 1962. Skeptical of such an assertion, he asked for a recap.  Hastings recounted the teacher’s personal encouraging words almost word-for-word.

Once a month, several of Hastings’ retired teaching friends still get together for breakfast at the pancake house.  “The last time we were there, one of them said he still gets together occasionally with his old Ag teacher, who is now in his 90s.  Life is good.”

Hastings and his wife, Jeri, now live in Kettering, Ohio.
